We know the vet clinic can be a scary place for our pets- often they associate it with negative experiences as it is where they go when they are feeling sick. At our Fur Life Vet clinics, we take the time to ensure pets are experiencing the clinic in as stress-free a way as possible. From separate dog and cat facilities, to having in-clinic enrichment and- stress free handling techniques, we try to make their -and your- visit as easy as possible.
Learn more about various things you can do to help your pets have the best experience possible:
- Calming hormones like Adaptil for dogs, and Feliway for cats, can help communicate to your pet that they are in a safe space. Our pet’s sense of smell is much better than ours, and is a primary method of communication. We supplement this by regularly cleaning using enzymatic cleaners that help to break down ‘fear’ scent from other pets that have visited.
- Some of our clinics offer cuddle consults which are a free and fun way to help your pet foster positive experiences with the clinic- just call us and book a time, and we’ll ensure there is a consult room you can visit where nothing bad will happen! No pokes, prods, or pulls- just a time to have some yummy treats, get used to being weighed, and feel more comfortable with our team.
- For our feline patients, if possible, we recommend doing some cat carrier training with them before it is time for their visit. For many cats, the only time they leave their house is to come and see us for their annual vaccinations or when they are sick! So their stress can start from the moment they see the carrier out. Using products like Feliway, or taking them for short positive car rides from time to time, can really help reduce their anxiety around trips to the vet.
- As puppies and kittens become adults, they can start to develop behavioural concerns. Our nursing team are trained to be able to help you identify potential causes for concern before they become worse- we recommend all our patients have a nurse behavioural consult at 10-12 months of age, to catch things early.
- For pets who maybe have had negative previous experiences, or who display significant fear and/or anxiety in clinic, there are many Pre-Visit Pharmaceutical (PVP) options that can help make the experience more positive and allow for a proper health check. We are able to advise about both natural and medical options, usually a holistic approach is the best option for these cases. Our team are always more than ready to answer your questions.
- Home visits can be really beneficial for some patients that are fearful in the car, or in new spaces. Why not consider organizing for our team to come to you?
- Should you have concerns about your pet’s behaviour, and are needing to take action, our clinic offers in-house behavioural consults with our team. We can help you rule out underlying causes for abnormal or difficult behaviours, listen and help formulate a plan to get things back on track, for you and your fur babies.
